Unite welcomed today’s (Tuesday 12 June) ruling by High Court Judge, Sir Aklaqh Choudhury QC, at the Employment Appeals Tribunal that dismissed an appeal by Gerard Coyne.
The ruling upholds an earlier ruling by High Court Judge, Jeffrey Burke QC, which found that the union had acted in accordance with its rules in calling a general secretary election.
Commenting on the ruling, a Unite spokesman said: “The dismissal of Mr Coyne’s appeal upholds the ruling of High Court Judge, Jeffrey Burke QC, and is a further endorsement that Unite acted in accordance with its rules in holding a general secretary election.
“While Mr Coyne is entitled to proceed in having his further complaints heard by His Honour Judge Burke QC at the end of this month, Unite is confident it will be further vindicated and that the hearing will show that the union upheld its rules throughout the election and that Mr Coyne has been misconceived to complain otherwise.”
