Margaret's story

I have no doubt that Unite Legal Services has been on my side throughout and my experience has been nothing but positive.

Unite member, Margaret, was involved in an accident while working as a diet coach. On the day of the accident, Margaret was moving equipment from her home to a meeting. The equipment was heavy and as she bent to pick up the box it was contained in, she injured her lower back.

Due to the fault and negligence of Margaret’s employer, she was injured as a result of unsafe working practices. Margaret had not been provided with any training or means of safely manoeuvring stock to or from her home.

Margaret, through Unite Legal Services, was contacted by a specialist personal injury solicitor to discuss her case. A claim was intimated to her employer and, following negotiations, liability was accepted by the insurers. This meant that Margaret did not require to proceed with court action in order to obtain compensation.

Unite Legal Services funded a medical report from a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, which assisted Margaret’s case and set out the injuries she sustained purely as a result of her employer failing to ensure that safe working practices were in place.

The supportive medical report was disclosed to the insurers and negotiations commenced. An initial offer of £5,750 was made, but rejected as this was too low. Eventually, a settlement was agreed in the sum of £10,342.10, which represented fair compensation for Margaret’s injuries and her loss of earnings.

Speaking of her experience with Unite Legal Services, Margaret said: “Thank you to Unite Legal Services for all of their help. I would certainly recommend this service as I was very happy with the assistance offered.”
