Unite Legal Services secures compensation for driver after accident at work

Unite member, Trevor Bland, worked as a road sweeper and suffered a serious shoulder injury when his vehicle became stuck in mud and tangled in wire mesh.

At the time of the accident, Trevor was working for Admec Municipal Service Ltd but he was on the premises of Niramax Group Ltd.

He contacted Unite Legal Services who brought proceedings against both companies on its member’s behalf.

Initially, the two companies refused to take responsibility for the accident and refused to pay compensation for Trevor’s injury. Shortly before the case was due to go to trial, the businesses accepted that they were at fault and agreed to pay £9,159 in compensation to Trevor.

Mr Bland said: “I couldn’t be happier with the service I received through Unite, it was spot on. Unite Legal Services could not have been more professional and I am very pleased with the settlement.”

Karen Reay, Unite regional secretary for the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “This case will be of interest to many drivers who are often sent by their employers to work on other sites. When accidents happen, companies sometimes wrongly try to shift the blame between themselves. With the support of Unite Legal Services, drivers who suffer accidents through the negligence of others are more likely to be able to win the compensation they deserve.
