Unite Legal Services secures compensation for member injured in work accident

Unite Legal Services has secured compensation for a Unite member and HGV driver, who was seriously injured by a forklift truck.

The member parked his work vehicle at the customer’s site and walked towards the rear of his vehicle. Without warning, a forklift truck reversed and the wheel slashed his leg.

Following his accident, the member was off work for nine months as he was unable to drive. He suffered a substantial loss of earnings during this time. However, Unite Legal Services was able to secure an interim payment for the member to assist him and his family.

As he was a Unite member, we were able to negotiate a very substantial settlement on his behalf, and he kept 100% of the compensation.

The defendant admitted liability and Unite Legal Services arranged for the member to be examined by one of the most experienced surgeons in the North East. Unfortunately, the medical prognosis was that the member’s scar would be permanent and he would require ongoing treatment. Thankfully, the member was able to return to his current job although he is still wary about hitting his leg.

The member said: “I am delighted with the result that Unite Legal Services was able to achieve on my behalf. My injury has caused a lot of pain and financial worry, but thanks to Unite Legal Services I am able to get myself back on track”.

Karen Reay, North East, Yorkshire and Humberside regional secretary at Unite the Union, said: “Unite Legal Services will fight hard for members to achieve a legal remedy if they have suffered injury caused by the defendant’s negligence – we’re here to make sure our members have access to expert, specialist legal representation.”
