Unite member secures compensation after injury in work

With support from Unite Legal Services, a man has been awarded £12,830 after he was injured in work.

Employed at a printing company, the trade union member was using a hand pallet truck to move a particularly heavy pallet in a small area. The equipment jarred, which then pulled his shoulder and worsened a pre-existing rotator cuff injury.

He only had statutory sick pay for the eight months he needed off work.

“My shoulder injury really put me off my feet for a while,” the Unite member said. “Life in general was difficult for a long time. I could barely lift my arm, so everyday tasks were a huge struggle.”

He got in touch with Unite Legal Services to see if an accident at work claim could be made on his behalf.

He continued: “I would recommend anyone joining a trade union. It made the legal process a lot easier for me and their support was invaluable.”

Kevin Hepworth, East Midlands regional legal officer at Unite the Union, said: “Regular monitoring of work equipment and employees’ work space can help prevent painful injuries like this.

“We’re pleased that, through his membership, Unite Legal Services was able to provide him access to specialist serious injury solicitors. Not only did he access professional and compassionate support, but his membership meant he received 100 per cent of his compensation.”
